Church Sketches

While on a field trip to Seattle my class stopped by the St. Ignatius church. This was a gorgeous church with incredible organic design inside. When I was in the church I felt very comforted by the lighting, the movement, and the closeness you feel while in the church. Being Catholic it was different to be in a church that was not traditional. My views on churches are very traditional and this one took me by surprise when I walked in. I appreciated the architecture, design, and concept of the church, but when it comes to religion and certain views I do not believe the design went the right way.

Job Shadow

I had a job shadow experience at Callison. This is a large company located in Seattle that specializes in retail, hospitality, and commercial design. While job shadowing I was able to see current and past projects that certain people created. I loved looking at all the projects and seeing that they used the same skills that I am currently learning in Interior Design. The firm showed me that if you can see it in your mind then it will become a reality. One thing that made me question the firm was that they focus on what the client wants. This is normal for design, but I thought that the client was the one that wanted your insight and that is why you were the designer, but at this firm they work with professionals in the same career that know what they want, how they want it, and where they want it. All in all the experience was great and I learned a lot of information that will help me in the future.

Wheelchair Experience

The wheelchair experience was something that was a good learning tool, but also something I would not want to do again. It was extremely hard trying to control the wheelchair and move about the building. It became frustrating when you exit a building to go to a new building and cannot find the wheelchair access easily. I learned that Washington State University does not take into consideration people with disabilities. They are improving on the new buildings, but there definitely needs to be some remodeling done on the exterior and the interior of the older buildings. This was a great experience and it really helped me realize how hard it is to be in a wheelchair, and how to build a kitchen for someone in a wheelchair.
